THE BIGGEST SCAM FIGHT IN BOXING EVER
Punchingbagskunk resident boxing expert Greg Townes analyzes the super boxing extravaganza fight between Marvin Hagler vs Ray Leonard. The biggest scam fight in boxing ever. It has always been great controversy surrounding this fight. You have die-hard boxing purest that are split on who actually won the fight. Greg breaks the fight down like only he can. He explores the specifics of pre-fight negotiations.
DID RAY LEONARD HAVE A UNFAIR ADVANTAGE?
Some say Haglers camp gave Leonard’s camp unfair advantages. The ring size as well and agreement to have the fight shortened from 15 rounds to 12 rounds. This turned out to be significant intangibles. Ray was totally exhausted after 12 round. What would have been the outcome if he had to go 3 more rounds?
Ray was on his bicycle all night. He was using the whole ring. Staying out of harms reach was a deciding factor. If they fought in a smaller ring, Hagler might have been able to corner Ray easier to pummel him in the corners.
LEONARD VS HAGLER, WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE JUDGES SCORECARDS
A boxing judge is responsible for judging the results of a boxing match, with as many as three judges typically present at ringside to score the bout and assign points to the boxers, based on punches that connect, defense, knockdowns, and other, more subjective, measures. At the Olympic or World championship level, there are usually five judges.
A boxing match that has not ended in a knockout, technical knockout (TKO) or disqualification (DQ), having reached the limit on the preset number of rounds has “gone the distance” and the fighter with the higher score at the end of the fight is ruled the winner. With three judges, unanimous decisions and split decisions are possible, as are draws. Because of the open-ended style of boxing, judging, fights may end with controversial results. in which one of the fighters may believe they have been “robbed” or unfairly denied a victory.
DID RAY’S BOXING OR MARVINS PRESSURE WIN THE FIGHT?
What is more impressive? Applying pressure or slick boxing? Some maintained that Ray just stole rounds. He used punch flurries. Always in the last 30 seconds of every round. Some maintain that Hagler was the aggressor throughout and deserve the decision. Others scarf at that notion pointing out that Ray out boxed Marvin.
WHY THE FIGHT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED A DRAW
Boxing expert Greg Townes says the fight should have been called a draw. That way Marvin keeps his belt, (Greg maintains Marvin won the fight) and Ray would have received credit for coming off a long layoff of inactivity and fighting the best fighter on the planet.
