MOST IMPORTANT PUNCH IN BOXING?

There is a boxing saying that goes back far enough that nobody seems to know where it originated. The most important punch in boxing is the jab.

“EVERYTHING STARTS AND ENDS WITH THE JAB”.

Usually the first punch taught to that skinny kid that walks into the boxing gym because they have been getting bullied is the jab.

It’s a straight punch that is right to the point. A jab can be used as a offensive weapon, or a defensive weapon.

On offense the jab can be used in a variety of ways. you can use it to obscure an opponent’s line of vision. Allowing you to set up power shots like the straight right hand out of a orthodox stance, or a straight left delivered from a southpaw stance.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PUNCH IN BOXING,THE POWER JAB.

A jab can be used to discourage super aggressive fighters from moving forward in attack mode. Fighters that walk toward their opponent undeterred, showing little regard for their adversaries punching power, or ability to hurt them, that’s called walking through, or walking down an opponent.

Don’t COUNT the days, make the days COUNT.

Power jabs can stop these marches forward. By correctly gauging distance, and executing a punch with precise timing. Then launching the punch off back foot, connecting with the punch as the fighter is moving forward can be devastating.

The velocity of the power jab coupled with the momentum of the other fighter moving forward can cause explosive power when they collide.

THE PROBING JAB

The probing jab is used differently to achieve positive results. One way you use the probing jab is to measure distance.

Tommy Hearns was famous for extending his arm out and leaving it right in the line of vision of his opponent to blind him. Then dropping that nuclear weapon he disguised as a right hand.

Probing with the jab also breaks an opponent’s attack rhythm. If an opponent is in a (1-2-3), (1-2), (1-2-3) attack rhythm. Probing with the jab coupled with feints can destroy a fighters rhythm. Breaking a fighters attack rhythm is like keeping him constantly off balance. Making him start all over like a skipping record.

THE FEINT JAB

Feinting a jab is a deceptive blow or movement. To feint a jab is to make an opponent believe your intended attack is going to point A, when it’s really going to point B.

Feinting any punch is essentially laying a trap. You can feint foot movement, feint shoulders, you can even feint with your eyes and expressions.

Bernard Hopkins explaining the lost art of feinting, as related to the most important punch in boxing, the jab.

One way to feint the jab is to purposely throw your left jab off target to the left of your opponents head. Do this for half the round and your opponent will begin to slip your off target punch.

If you lay this trap long enough your opponent will begin to attempt to counter the assumed missing punch with a punch of his own.

Normally by slipping his head to the left to prepare a left hook counter. This is when you FEINT or fake the jab, walking them right into your originally planned right hand. This is why old-timers say, boxing is Chess not Checkers.

THE BODY JAB

Jabbing to the body is a today thing. Fighters of the past didn’t throw that punch much. Too risky. The lead uppercut carries that same distinction.

But fighters like Floyd Mayweather has made the punch popular amongst young fighters. The jab to the body is a punch that to be effective the thrower has to have speed and keen reflexes.

The body jab is another punch that can disrupt fight rhythm and keep an opponent off balance. It’s not a particularly strong punch. But when used right can be a valuable asset to a fighters punch arsenal.
