HOW CAN BOXING BE RESTORED TO RESPECTABILITY?

Fix pro boxing. What is the remedy to fix professional boxing? The answer is simple. Fighters should get a frequent fighter bonus tacked on their purse. It should be a enormous bonus check. This way fighters would have incentive to fight more often, instead of once a year. In addition professional fighters should be required to have a minimum of six professional sanctioned bouts a year. If that fight quota is not met. Then the penalty for not reaching the fight requirement should be enormous fines and penalties. These two stipulations will singlehandedly restore professional boxing to its once glorified lead of all combat sports.

WHY A MANDATORY SIX FIGHT RULE WILL FIX BOXING.

Any fighter that’s living a fighters life in shape should be able to get in fighting shape in 2 months. So fighters should be required to fight 6 times a year or be penalized/taxed a enormous fee for not making the 6 fight minimum. Again, this would give incentive to fighters, promoters, managers and even trainers to get these fighters in the ring, as well as fix pro boxing. This would also eventually lead to fighters fighting each other instead of sitting on their belts. Too many champions in the same weight class claiming to be the best.

FIX PRO BOXING, HOW TODAYS FIGHT FANS ARE CHEATED.

All the bickering about who’s the best will cease because we will KNOW who the best is after they fight. The real winner in this will be the boxing fans. As it is now, the fans have to endure rumors of fights CONSTANTLY. But almost never does the fight actually materialize. And when it does its usually once a year regardless of weight class. Fighters in the 50’s & 60’s fought multiple times a year.70’s & 80’s also seen fighters and champions fighting frequently. Today’s champions fight on average once a year. Some even every 2 years.

WHY BOXING DOES NOT NEED ANYMORE PODCASTERS OR CONTENT CREATORS TO FIX PRO BOXING.

What the fluck happened? It’s like social media has turned the boxing game into TALKING about fights instead of actually FIGHTING fights. You know why? Because the majority of boxing fans today are all talk and no action. That’s why you got content creators and Podcasters talking, talking, talking. Talking strategies. Discussing potential match-ups. Talking possibilities. Talking about everything except results. You can’t talk results if there is no FIGHT.

WHAT IS BOXINGS YAPPING PHENOMENON?

You see most these wannabe boxing experts never fought. Would never throw a punch at nothing. As a matter a fact they talk about stuff they are petrified to do in real life. This type of culture in boxing leads to the yapping phenomenon. This puts the value on yapping about fighting, instead of actually fighting. You see, real men value results. These new school jackasses like to talk about possibilities, like their on the VIEW.

WHAT MAKES A LEGENDARY BOXING FIGHT.

The only reason new school jackasses say things like, “I ENJOY THE ARTISTRY AND SKILL “is because they know they would never have the balls to get in a ring and go toe to toe with anybody. So they say artistry bull$h!t is good. And firefights are bad. And if you say firefights are what makes legendary fights. They answer with disrespectful comments about Muhammad Ali. Or they talk about making your money and getting out the game healthy. Healthy is cool, but tell me a legendary fight in the last 5 or 10 years. EXACTLY!!

HOW TO SPOT THE CROOKS IN PROFESSIONAL BOXING?

We are treated to slap-boxing, tap tap your it, bull$h!t fights. And have to pay MORE money every time. No, the answer is mandatory yearly fights across all weight classes. And mandatory penalties and fines if requirements are not met. You don’t need every boxing commission in the world on board to make this happen. Each individual commission and promoters could easily make this stipulation a staple in every promotional contract. And those that DONT. Well they would easily be identified as the element that’s wrong with boxing.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF STAREDOWNS

Pre-fight staredown. Some say stare downs mean little. I disagree. The winner of a stare down, if by big margin some of the time has the initial edge in the fight, and some of the time usually ends up winning. Intimidation is a silent weapon in boxing. Some guys have it, other guys have issues dealing with it.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOXING CHAMPION PRE-FIGHT STAREDOWN

And I guess, there are different ways to play the psychological game.
I liked how the old version of George Foreman handled it.
When his opponent went for a stare down, he ignored it, and looked very relaxed and confident.
It must have been frustrating to his foe.

What also pops up in mind is Larry Holmes’s “Let’s have a good fight” to Gerry Cooney after the
referee’s instructions. Another example of self-confidence addressed to the opponent. Benítez’ stare downs were great. Benitez was the epitome of cool and his stare down with Hearn’s is one of my all time favorites Thomas Hearn’s had one of the most frightening death stares I’ve ever seen,. Benitez has the aura of a boxing master, he exudes a confidence like “Who is this crude brute daring to challenge me?”

WHAT BOXING CHAMPIONS HAD THE MOST MENACING, INTIMIDATING AND FRIGHTINING STAREDOWNS?

Wilfred Benitez vs Maurice Hope, in 1981. Foreman vs Lyle, that one was nose-to-nose. Leonard vs Benitez is pretty good too. Toney vs McCallum 1 stare down was awesome and Pavlik vs Taylor 1 was a really good one. Foreman laid a good stare down on Frazier before their 1st fight as well. The two of them trading glares while Joe looks up at George is one of the classic boxing photos. Duran vs Barkley had a pretty good one to. Trinidad vs Hopkins as well as Tito vs. Vargas and Hagler vs Hearns, they both had that killer look. Aaron Pryor vs. Alexis Arguello 1 where Pryor stands in the middle of the ring pointing at Arguello with a chilling look was legendary. Vitali Klitschko, and Sonny Liston used the stare down to their advantage by deflating a guys ego before battle.

WHY MUHAMMAD ALI AND JOE FRAZIER PRE-FIGHT STAREDOWN WAS LEGENDARY.

For one that was a bit different, I liked Ali and Joe’s face off. Them talking it up before Manila was like, “yeah, let’s do this one more time”. This included the smack. Both guys were smiling as it seemed all part of the show before getting down to the real business. And boy, did they give the fans what they paid for.

Imagine if Joe and Ali didn’t talk to each other during instructions. Everybody would’ve thought “What’s up with the them? Maybe this fight will suck!” LOL. We all know better now.

MONEY RUINED BOXING AND NOW FIGHTERS HAVE NO KILLER INSTINCT.

Money ruined boxing. Tank Davis beats Shakur by knockout because Shakur is soft at the core. My eye test says so. I can look at a fighter and see if there is killer instinct, you know why? Because I had killer instinct when I was fighting. And I know what it looks like. Besides Tank Davis already smashed him in the gym, I will add allegedly. Devin Haney would barely survive to lose a unanimous decision. You know why? Because of the same thing, no killer in him.

FLOYD MAYWEATHERS LAST REAL FIGHT WAS AGAINST OSCAR DE’LAHOYA. THATS ANOTHER REASON MONEY RUINED BOXING.

There are some fighters that have killer instinct today like Vergil Ortiz, Terrence Crawford to name two more. But not many. And I got to add this. Floyd Mayweather had plenty killer in him coming up. But believe it or not, Oscar DeLaHoya took the killer out of Floyd. He hasn’t been a killer since their fight the same way Hector Camacho didn’t wanna kill anymore after Edwin Rosario hurt him.(Sorry guy’s, it’s the truth).

FIGHTERS TODAY ARE HANGING AT STRIP CLUBS AND POPPING BOTTLES.

These kids today are good don’t get me wrong. They are technically sound and all that. But always remember what Cus D’Amato liked to say. Boxing is 80% mental, only 20% physical. Money has softened the game of boxing. For whatever reason getting rich is the ONLY goal now. Things like honor, belt pride and simply being known as the best means nothing now. All that matters today is the dollar. I’m lying??Ok, fighters today always talking about they got to take care of their family, like fighters of the past didn’t love their families. And half these monkeys really busy hanging at strip clubs and popping bottles. They don’t give a rats a$$ about their families.

HAGLER, LEONARD, DURAN, HEARNS AND BENITEZ ALL HAD KILLER INSTINCT.

Fighters today are always saying things like “I wanna retire with all my mental facilities. Like fighters of yesterday wanted to be punch-drunk and blind. No, all that bullshit is a smokescreen for COWARDICE. They just scared to engage. These new-school boys would rather slap-box safely than do the honorable thing which is put their life on the line to give the fans what they want….A FIGHT!!!They bring up current boxing tragedies to justify their point like no fighters of the past suffered any tragedies. Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, Wilfred Benitez all had two things in common. The desire to be the best. And KILLER instinct.

WHY TODAYS BOXING CHAMPIONS ARE NOT SUPERMAN LIKE OLD-SCHOOL BOXERS.

The most important things about boxing are not on a stat sheet Idiots. You see, these new-school fans identify with Today’s fighters and say to themselves “I CAN DO THAT”. There is no superman today. This is why you got nerds and wimps arguing with professionals online. When I was fighting. If ANYBODY in my area was my weight class, I wanted to kill him. I can’t even imagine all this buddy buddy $h!t going on today. If I was even in the gym with someone my same weight, I’d start a fight some how. “I’M JUMPING ROPE OVER HERE, WHAT YOU THINK YOUR THE BEST 165Ib?Let’s go motherflucker. And when we sparred, it was a FIGHT, not a slap boxing match. Like the kids do today. What to think the famous Philadelphia gym wars was about dumbass ?Desire to be the BEST. Not the richest. WHATS MORE IMPORTANT IN BOXING, KNOWLEDGE OR WISDOM?

The information age has made everybody an expert, a superman. But knowledge is not wisdom. Knowledge comes from Google. Wisdom comes from experience. The problem is boxing is infiltrated by cowards who have NO business having a voice. WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT YOUR OPINION YOU JACKASS. The element of danger has been removed from boxing and now anybody can walkthrough a gate that in the past only superman walked through.

The fab 5(I add Wilfred Benitez because he belongs with them)fought each other making legendary fights that last forever. You’d be hard pressed to tell me any fight in the last 5 years that fits that legendary fight mold.

WHY IS RACE SUCH A BIG ISSUE IN BOXING NOW?

The reason why race is such an issue in boxing these days is because there are a bunch of cowards in boxing now. Honorable men don’t look at race. As a matter a fact, boxing was once the most colorblind of sports. Didn’t matter if you was from the slums of Argentina, Panama, Puerto Rico, England, Philippines or the hardened streets of Philadelphia and Detroit. If you were good, you were good. And EVERYBODY acknowledged that you were good.

Race is involved because you have a bunch of nerds who secretly identify with their idols. Making their fighters continued stay on top of the game vital to their self-esteem. IN other words if their idol loses, they are immediately reminded that they are LOSERS. So they do ANYTHING to keep their guy on top. Including spend all their money to support their idol. Argue online against logic and common sense. All vaginal foolishness that has no place in boxing. Do you really think Canelo Alvarez could compete with Marvin Hagler? If you do…….YOUR THE PROBLEM!!

Who gives a $h!t about cash cow. Real men care about who’s the best, not who has more money. Since when did CASHCOW become a category to measure greatness? But when you get to world-class competition, arm punching will not suffice.

HOW CAN A SKINNY SMALL PERSON THROW KNOCKOUT PUNCHES?

You have to put your entire body into your punches to gain maximum punching power. It does not really matter if your skinny. If you throw your punches correctly, you can deliver devastating knockout blows with ease. Greg mentions fighting legend Bruce Lee as a prime example of a small guy that could punch with deadly force.

IF I COPY A GREAT FIGHTER, WILL I BECOME GREAT?

A rock & roll star started out practicing everybody else songs initially. They then got good enough at others songs that they started incorporating their own style of playing. They developed their own style. Boxing is the same way. Practice great fighters like Muhammad Ali, Marvin Hagler, etc. But then establish your own style and rhythm. TEACHING THE JAB PUNCH IN BOXING

Teaching the jab punch from boxing expert Greg Townes. He says throw the jab straight. Always punch through your target. Always bring your hand back to your face height without dropping it on the way back.

Never lift your elbows up during punching. That is what trainers in boxing circles call chicken winging it. You can get your ribs broke exposing them to danger like that.

Always tuck your chin into your shoulder. Which ever hand you throw, that’s what shoulder you tuck your chin to. Be sure to snap your jab like a whip on extension. The more pop/snap you put on your punch, the more damage your punch does. Snapping the jab can also cause cuts to opponents that are prone to cuts or have scar tissue already.

The energy is at the extension of the punch. Always turn your left fist clockwise while throwing the jab punch. If your southpaw fighter, turn your fist counter-clockwise. This can open up cuts on your opponent as well as adding extra pop on the punch.

HOW TO THROW A JAB TO THE BODY

If shooting a jab to the opponents midsection, always remember to bend at the knees, not the waist. Bending at the waist destroys balance and leaves you vulnerable to counter punches. Bending at the waist while throwing jab ignores all the advantages your legs can provide.

Sugar Ray Leonard was good at baiting opponents with a flicking, harmless jab to the body. He would do this to set traps. After throwing the jab to the body, he would oftentimes follow-up with a blistering right hand counter.

A jab is a type of punch used in the martial arts. Several variations of the jab exist, but every jab shares these characteristics: while in a fighting stance, the lead fist is thrown straight ahead and the arm is fully extended from the side of the torso. This process also involves a quick turn of the torso. It is an overhand punch; at the moment of impact, the pronated fist is generally held in a horizontal orientation with the palm facing the ground.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY AND BEST THROWERS

The word jab was first used in 1825, to mean “to thrust with a point.” The term is a Scottish variant of the word job, which means “to strike, pierce, thrust. Historians consider some of the best jabbers in history to be Sonny Liston, Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali, Hector Camacho, and Sugar Ray Leonard. Recent master jabbers include Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko, both coached by the same trainer and able to develop significant power into their jabs. Holmes’ jab has often been called “the best among Heavyweights”,Ali’s jab was famous for its speed^[4] and Liston’s for its power. Mike Tyson used a rare version of a slip jab, that allowed him to jab effectively against taller opponents with longer reach.

NEW-SCHOOL TRAINERS VS OLD-SCHOOL TRAINERS. WHO IS BETTER?

New-school trainers vs Old-school trainers. An old-school trainer is always a better choice over a new-school trainer. You ask Punchingbagskunk.com resident boxing expert Greg Townes why? Old-school trainers have experience as well as knowledge. New-school trainers only have knowledge.

New-school trainers might be able to teach you to throw a punch in battle…maybe! But they are not qualified to prepare you for the mental battle all fighters go through prior to fights. They can teach you how to knock someone down. But they cant teach you how to get up from a knockdown.

They are familiar with teaching the X’s and O’s, but not the intangibles concerning boxing. Things like mental preparation. Pre-fight fear and even overconfidence. New-school trainers can build up muscles but cant build confidence. They can tell you where to throw a hook, but cant mentally prepare you to step into the danger zone to land the hook on anything but the heavy bag.

A boxer‘s training depends largely on the point in their career at which he or she is situated. If the boxer is just a beginner, a minimal training routine might consist of learning how to hit a heavy bag, a speed bag, or a double end bag (a small bag with a cord on top and bottom connecting it to the floor and ceiling) as well as doing shadowboxing in front of a mirror, skipping rope, calisthenics and jogging every day, as well as an occasional practice bout inside the ring (sparring). Most beginning boxers will spend most of their early careers conditioning and establishing the fundamentals. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH HAND IS DOMINANT IN BOXING?

Why the hand you write with is your power hand in boxing. You know what hand is dominant because the dominant hand is the one that delivers the knockout results. Yeah that is overly simplistic, but true. Normally in boxing the dominant hand is the hand that delivers the most effective blows. When a fighter is setting an opponent up for a certain punch, or laying a trap. The end of said trap ends with the power punch. The lead hand is usually the decoy that’s feinting and walking the opponent into the trap. The rear hand is normally the missile waiting to be launched with devastating results.

Think of it like this. The dominant hand is the strong silent type. The decoy or less powerful hand is the big mouth always yapping. The big mouth talks talks and talks crap to opponent then runs down an alley with the opponent chasing him. And guess who is waiting in that alley? You guessed it, the dominant hand. BOOM! Fights over.

HOW DO YOU BECOME A GREAT FIGHTER?

I loved the way the young Ray Leonard movement and foot placement kept him in the right angle to counter with maximum power. The way he moved but flattened out for burst of exploding combinations was one I stole. The way Michael Spinks sought of leaned awkwardly to his left with his hands high when fighting a guy with killer hook to minimize the opponents landing frequency while simultaneously setting them up to counter by shifting his weight to the back foot launching that powerful straight right.

How Meldrick Taylor’s radar and speed was so good he could stand in trenches and land 3-4 punch combinations overwhelming guys so much the wouldnt return fire hypnotized. Thomas Hearns could generate monster power and accuracy for his right hand by placing his left as a rangefinder in the face of the opponent blinding him as well as setting his legs firmly to deliver all 147 lbs into that straight right while simultaneously shifting his weight to left foot to follow-up with the left hook to the body.

HOW TO FIGHT LIKE BRUCE LEE.

The way Larry Holmes caught most overhand rights before they landed by timing his left to catch punch in arch blocking it. How Ray Robinson threw that round right to the body and sometimes even to the back. Judo, Aikido etc. And he created Jeet Kune Do, I style all his own. That’s why Bruce always said fighting is an expression of yourself.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN UNIQUE BOXING STYLE BY MASTERING COUNTERPUNCHING.

A kid picks up a guitar and and starts to learn the same instrument many have played. When he is done learning, he has created his own unique style. Playing the same instrument. These days kids don’t want to do the work and take the shortcut. They see a great fighter and copy him and think they will become great. That’s his style. You can’t put a triangle into a square. You must take the time to study so it all becomes second nature. At this point you will have the skills to create your own style.

Then you start trying your style out in combat (sparring). After you eliminate what doesn’t work, keep what does, and keep adding. I always wanted at LEAST 5 or 6 counters for every conceivable punch thrown at me. If it’s a power jab 5 counters. The up jab, 5 counters. Like the body jab 5 counters. Say it’s a straight right 5 counters. On the chance it’s a right cross, 5 counters. If it’s a left hook 5 counters. Hook to the body 5. Uppercut 5. That’s every conceivable punch with both hands. These counters have to be practiced until perfection and automatic response, then tried out in combat.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MASTER ONE COUNTERPUNCH?

This is only punches. You have to do this with every conceivable angle you might be in in the ring. It’s crucial to do situational preparations such as guy keeps punching you in the balls. You don’t have a counter practiced for that, so my response was always street in them situations. I don’t know, what is there 8-9 basic punches in boxing? So you need at least 50 prepared counters already on autopilot. I would practice all 5 I have in my arsenal in sparring. This one works better on short guys, this one on tall guys, this one if he’s running, this one if he’s tired, this if I’m tired etc. To get just one counter on autopilot take months.

HOW TO BECOME A GREAT FIGHTER WITH NO NATURAL TALENT?

This is where natural talent comes in to play. If a person has natural talent that 3 months it takes Joe ordinary, it only takes talent dude a week. That’s why Joe ordinary sometimes ends up a champion and loads of talent guy doesn’t. You see Joe ordinary HAS to work hard when everything comes easy to God given talent guy. Which eventually starts to erode talent guys work ethic.

I’m getting off subject. What I’m trying to really say is just like most everything in the world these days these kids want instant gratification, so they are taking the easy road. Don’t give me that hard work dedication shit, getting in condition don’t make you a fighter. People run 25 mile marathons are they fighters? They in shape but not fighters. I can tell you tons of champions that shunned working out. It takes many factors to come together to become a champion. And on that journey any small thing can derail it. That’s why I always address champions by calling them just that, “WHATS UP CHAMP” because to climb that mountain aint easy or fast. Godbless

Now I know you Floyd fans will point out that Floyd Jr. implements the fighting style much better than his father did. He has garnered much more success with that style of fighting. He seems to have perfected it. The way Floyd Jr jabs to the body while sliding back out of danger is something his father never did. The way Floyd Jr throws the right hand lead punch with power is another sign that Jr uses the style more effectively. Floyd Jr’s defense is absolutely impenetrable. And I think we all know Jr carries more pop in his punches than Sr did. But the undeniable evidence that Jr is better at the style is his undefeated record. 50-0 is 50-0, You can not argue with a bubble

RAY LEONARD BEAT FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR, WOULD HE BEAT FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR ALSO

Ray Leonard knocked out Floyd Mayweather Sr. September 9th 1978 at the Providence Rhode Island Civic Center. The Civic Center happens to be 5 minutes from the home that Greg from Punchingbagskunk grew up in. My hometown. Anyway enough trivia, back to Ray and Floyd. During their boxing match Leonard applied constant pressure to Floyd. Leonard was never in any danger at all. Floyd could not get his respect despite throwing a very respectable amount of punches each round. When he layed on the ropes, he was picked apart by Leonard. And when he came forward he was outgunned.

Some would argue that Floyd Jr hits harder. His defense is more refined. Pretty Boy Floyd would not lay on the ropes and let Sugar beat him to a pulp. Well ok, I say to you, IT’S THE SAME STYLE!! Ray Leonard methodically broke down that style with constant pressure. Ray was deadly accurate when opponents chose to lay on the ropes. Just ask World ranked prizefighter Andy Price. Plus Floyd is mediocre when pressured. Example: Maidana, Coorley, Augustus. Don’t forget how fast Ray was. Go look at them old Olympic clips of him on YouTube.

RAY FACED BETTER COMPETITION

Ray’s level of competition was substantially tougher. Sure there are some great fighters on Floyd Mayweather’s record. But you look close, and you will see that there are some asterisks present. Shane Mosley was well past his prime. Canelo Alvarez was a puppy. Some say Marcos Maidana beat him. Was Manny Pacquiao injured? Oscar De La Hoya?? Diego Corrales? Zab Judah, Jose Luis Castillo, Victor Ortiz, Arturo Gatti, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Andre Berto?? Oh I forgot, Conner McGregor and Jake Paul. Naaah! only kidding. LOL! My point is, are any of these guys Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns or Roberto Duran? No disrespect but I don’t think so. By the way, Ray Leonard beat them all.

Punch heavy bag until your hands bleed. That’s good.

It dispels the age old myth of overly protecting your hands during heavy bag punching. Punchingbagskunk.com is not telling people to not use precautions to protect from injury.

But skin burns and structural damage are two different things. Protecting your hands from bone damage from the force your knuckle’s feel from impact while hitting punching bag is a valid concern.

Keep in mind the gloves do a good job of protecting your hands. The same way a sore needs to not be covered to heal faster. The more times you scrape the surface skin off from hitting the bag, causes it to get tougher.

Skin has to be tougher.

Greg from Punchingbagskunk.com explains that skinned knuckle’s is a rite of passage in the fight game. If your not willing to endure scraped up knuckles. Then boxing is not the sport for you.

Others such as wrestling (excluding professional wrestling) and judo (punches and other striking techniques, atemi, are present in judo kata, but are forbidden in competitions) do not use punches at all. There are many types of punches and as a result, different styles encompass varying types of punching techniques.

If you put Vaseline and lotion on your hands all the time. The skin on your knuckle’s will take longer to toughen up sufficiently to resist the tearing from the force of hitting the bag.

You NEED to rip that skin over and over until it forms a tougher coat of skin on the area that makes contact with the bag. The hand-wraps stabilize your hand protecting the bones.

The gloves reduce some of the force from impact of the punch. But the tiny movement of the hand-wraps on the skin is what scrapes the skin off.

Punching heavy bag until your hands bleed, that’s good.

The same way a broken bone heals stronger than before the break. The skin reacts the same way. Every time you skin your knuckles, it takes more force to skin it again.

And eventually it begins to withstand the force all together.
