New-school trainers vs Old-school trainers. An old-school trainer is always a better choice over a new-school trainer. You ask Punchingbagskunk.com resident boxing expert Greg Townes why? Old-school trainers have experience as well as knowledge. New-school trainers only have knowledge.

New-school trainers might be able to teach you to throw a punch in battle…maybe! But they are not qualified to prepare you for the mental battle all fighters go through prior to fights. They can teach you how to knock someone down. But they cant teach you how to get up from a knockdown.

They are familiar with teaching the X’s and O’s, but not the intangibles concerning boxing. Things like mental preparation. Pre-fight fear and even overconfidence. New-school trainers can build up muscles but cant build confidence. They can tell you where to throw a hook, but cant mentally prepare you to step into the danger zone to land the hook on anything but the heavy bag.

A boxer‘s training depends largely on the point in their career at which he or she is situated. If the boxer is just a beginner, a minimal training routine might consist of learning how to hit a heavy bag, a speed bag, or a double end bag (a small bag with a cord on top and bottom connecting it to the floor and ceiling) as well as doing shadowboxing in front of a mirror, skipping rope, calisthenics and jogging every day, as well as an occasional practice bout inside the ring (sparring). Most beginning boxers will spend most of their early careers conditioning and establishing the fundamentals. For the amateur or professional boxer preparing for a competition or bout, however, training is much more stringent. Boxing is widely considered one of the most physically demanding sports in the world.

Goofy stick play and patty cake pad work do nothing to prepare a fighter for real combat. And new-school trainers love to work the pads with people they are training. Boxing is about confidence not physical strength. You build a fighters confidence so when they are ready to take that ring walk and step into the boxing ring, they are fighting machines. They will believe they are the greatest. And as a man thinketh……you know the rest.

Michael Gerard Tyson (born June 30, 1966) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1985 to 2005. Nicknamed “Iron Mike”^[3] and “Kid Dynamite” in his early career, and later known as “The Baddest Man on the Planet”,^[4] Tyson is considered to be one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.^[5] He reigned as the undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990. In sports, hand wraps or other padding such as gloves may be used to protect athletes and practitioners from injuring themselves.^[1][2] The use of punches varies between different martial arts and combat sports. Styles such as boxing, Suntukan or Russian fist fighting use punches alone, while others such as Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Lethwei or karate may use both punches and kicks. Others such as wrestling (excluding professional wrestling) and judo (punches and other striking techniques, atemi, are present in judo kata, but are forbidden in competitions) do not use punches at all. There are many types of punches and as a result, different styles encompass varying types of punching techniques.

If you put Vaseline and lotion on your hands all the time. The skin on your knuckle’s will take longer to toughen up sufficiently to resist the tearing from the force of hitting the bag.

You NEED to rip that skin over and over until it forms a tougher coat of skin on the area that makes contact with the bag. The hand-wraps stabilize your hand protecting the bones.

The gloves reduce some of the force from impact of the punch. But the tiny movement of the hand-wraps on the skin is what scrapes the skin off.

Punching heavy bag until your hands bleed, that’s good.

The same way a broken bone heals stronger than before the break. The skin reacts the same way. Every time you skin your knuckles, it takes more force to skin it again.

And eventually it begins to withstand the force all together.

Queer Street what does it mean in boxing. Queer is a blanketed term for gender minorities who are not heterosexual.

A term denoting and or relating to a sexual or gender identity, that does not line up with established ideas of sexuality and gender, could very well be construed as disrespectful or even offensive to a fighter.

Saying a fighter was on queer street refers to a short term situation. The reality is there are other terms and sayings in the noble art of pugilism that sting much more. They would be an affliction. Or opposed to a temporary situation.

To say a fighter has no heart would be an affliction. And it is a cardinal sin to have that term associated with you if you are a prizefighter. Punchingbagskunk.com article,

It is really redundant to call a person who climbs ring stairs to swap punches with an opponent a coward. The fact that individuals sacrifice during training.

Getting in a boxing ring to essentially put their life on the line in my estimation are absolutely nowhere close to being in the same universe as a coward.
